She Was Told To Be “Just a Nurse” — But This Teenage Girl Became One of Yugoslavia’s Most Fearless Fighters

“She thought of the wounded before she thought of herself.”

Albina Mali-Hočevar

Survivors who served with Albina say she was unlike anyone else on the battlefield.

According to one wartime account:

“The nurse Albina always paid more attention to the wounded than to herself.
She knew neither fear nor exhaustion while there were wounded partisans to be taken care of.”

She would drag injured fighters to safety even while bleeding herself.
She’d sprint across fields under fire with bandages in one hand and a rifle in the other.

Albina didn’t choose between nurse and soldier — she became both.
